What Else, If Not Addictions?

by Raymond M. Landry

Recently, I have created opportunities for myself to share this "Autopoietic" (Self Creation) perspective by organizing public forums and two-day intensives where people attending are invited to consider all their behaviours in the larger context of what else those behaviours could mean in their lives, instead of blindly accepting others' opinions of who they are and what they are doing.

What else, if not addictions? Well, just consider for a second that maybe, just maybe, we human beings are doing the best we know how to do with what we know and with what is available to us at the time (including beliefs, values, attitudes). Add to that that many of our behaviours occur out of consciousness, in a habitual process we could call "programming". Programming from the time we are toddlers or younger. What if we suddenly had access to the very "switch" that turned that behaviour on and off? Or that there was no need to turn anything on or off because we had reframed and changed the context, hence, the meaning of that behaviour?

My experience with the WEL-Systems perspective (which included NLP and the quantum sciences) has provided me with the joy of knowing my "self" in a way that allows me to create the space I need for my life, all-the-while being an invitation to others to step into their own space, in a way that provides them access to all that is possible for them. I know, for myself, that the weight of the responsibility I used to hold for other peoples' lives (which is often the downfall of younger Addictions workers) is forever gone. I know that there is nothing I can do for others that they cannot do for themselves. In the context of the "helping professions", my effectiveness and skill come from my ability to truly be my self, and not from how I practice a method or use a tool.

It is very exciting to talk to people who come in feeling locked into a behaviour and see them light up when they are asked to consider who they believe themselves to be, and find out that they have unlimited choices about how to live their lives. They leave seeing new possibilities for their lives.

Create your world? You're already doing it whether you realize it or not! My two pennies about it is that you might as well create the life that makes you happy and gets you what you really want. Take good care of your Self!
