Exponential Potentialby Anita Allen Sitting in my backyard and watching my garden begin to awaken I was struck by the tenacity of the plants. They survive the freezing winter temperatures only to reach for the sky the minute the sun begins to warm them. They are undaunted by obstacles such as rocks and patio stones as they simply find another route. They remain true to the biological imperative to grow and they do so with unrestrained enthusiasm. I believe that, like the plants in my garden, each of us has a need to grow and evolve in our lives. Unlike a plant, which continues to always express itself the same way, we are capable of choosing how to express ourselves season to season. We can choose to be a daisy and then we can chose to be an orchid. We are only limited by our own perceptions. As Henry Ford said, "If you think you can do a thing or think you can't do a thing, you're right." Our thinking is what shapes our reality. Every invention, every business, every discovery began as a thought. Those thoughts became reality because they were followed by curiosity about what might be possible rather than simply allowing a limiting belief to end the process of discovery. Limiting beliefs are the often the well-intentioned voices of caution that have been passed on to us by others. They can sound like, "don't get to big for your britches" or "if you change your mind too often people will think you are unreliable". And yet, deep inside ourselves we know the truth of who we are and what is possible when we can leave those limitations behind. As we each explore our own exponential potential we create a vision for ourselves that can be so compelling our curiosity and passion for it can move us beyond any perceived obstacle. It is then that we give our families, our communities and ourselves the gift of our genius. A close friend once said to me, "Caledon is a place where people come to live their dreams." I couldn't agree more.
